During my first week as a Student Leader, I was the only Hispanic high school leader at Outdoor School. I was very nervous and afraid of not being able to fit in. But, my experience was amazing and made me come back again and again. As a Student Leader, I have been able to appreciate the beauty of nature and see sixth graders appreciate it, too.
Many of the weeks I was [at camp] as a Student Leader, I had a groups of Hispanic sixth graders. I feel that I was a positive role model for those students. One week I taught my field study completely in Spanish. [The] group knew very little English but was engaged in the activities at Outdoor School at all times.
At the end of the week, I know I have helped make a difference in sixth graders’ lives when they don’t want to leave Camp Howard. This experience gave me a better outlook of what I want to do in the future, and Outdoor School is definitely in it.
